For the Year 2018 - 2019

A regional consultation on Adolescent health was organized on 18-19th March 2019 at New Delhi. This was the sixth regional meeting after five others which had been organized in different parts of the country. The meeting was organized by Population foundation of India (PFI) and The YP Foundation (TYPF) and involved different stakeholders who are working towards adolescent health in the country like government officials, health care service providers, counsellors, frontline workers, non-government organizations and youth representatives from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

Association of adolescent and child care in India (AACCI) was represented by Dr. Aashima from Delhi and Dr. Manu from Chandigarh.

Dr Sunita Manchanda AACCI Delhi NCR Coordinator attended this event on behalf of AACCI. The IAPG and GAFPA are working with aim to empower patients to work as equal partner in healthcare pathways. Dr Ratna CEO Daksham and Health Founder IAPG started workshop by welcoming and explaining objectives of workshop.

Dr. Sanjiv Kumar, Chair IAPG & Director IIHMR along with esteemed faculty discussed various gaps of access of healthcare in context of patients. Mr. Brian Kennedy CEO GAFPA provided excellent patient advocacy training

The need and ways to maintain quality of safe and cost effective heathcare was discussed among various patients group associations.

Bharati Vidyapeeth college of Engineering for Women, (BVCOEW) Pune

Student Development Section of BVCOE organized one day workshop along with AACCI.
This was co-ordinated by Prof. S. A. Itkarkar BVCOEW (NSS PO) and AACCI event Coordinator. The topic taken were 1) Adolescent Nutrition 2) Menstrual Hygiene .3) Awareness about PCOS.
A total 80 students of adolescent age group (17-19 years) were present for the same

Principal Dr.S.R.Patil inaugurated the event and explained the importance & need of the topic. Prof.K.R.Chaudhari (SDO) also attended.

AACCI faculty were Prof. Dr.Vidya Gaikwad (Gynaecologist) and Dr.Aishwarya (P G Student) from Dr. D.Y.Patil Medical College, Pimpri.

They explained the concepts in details and answered all group and personal queries.

A predesigned questionnaire on menstrual health and hygiene was given to girls to assess their knowledge.
A Healthcare check up was also done.

Dr Swati Bhave was invited to conduct a AACCI Parenting program – on the topic of positive discipline

A 2 hour session was held along with AACCI faculty Dr Veena Kundalkar, Dr Sharmila Gujar on and Sujata Hingne who did role plays to show what positive discipline means . After the session there was active interaction with the parents

The feedback received was that everyone really enjoyed the interactive teaching session

AACCI Parenting program – Making communication with your teen a Joyful experience
A 3-hour session on communication with teens was held at AACCI centre

Pune Corporator Madhuri Sahastrbudhe was chief guest. She had come to see the program and start c collaboration with her centre Balranjan in Pune for parenting programs The faculty were Dr Swati Bhave, Dr Veena Kundalkar, Dr Sharmila Gujar, Dr Shailaja Mane, Smita Salunke and Dr Bageshree Deokar.
The parents were from various professional backgrounds: doctors, engineers, and self-employed business people and management executives.
There was very good interaction and every one enjoyed the role plays done by faculty to show dos and don’ts in communication

Jehangir hospital Pune has started a Daily adolescent clinic from 4-6 pm Dr Swati Y Bhave is the Head of clinic which has 5 other adolescent specialists As part of outreach programs to create awareness in the community, Jehangir Hospital has planned to work in collaboration with AACCI for parenting programs in schools and colleges The first program on parenting was held on 20th October in St Arnold’s School in Pune.

Nearly 400 parents attended the session which was kept on the open day for parents by the school.

Dr Swati Y Bhave gave a one our lecture on making teen parenting a joyful experience. Dr Shailaja Mane consultant at JH Adolescent clinic and Pune AACCI coordinator gave a lecture on need of Adolescent clinic and services delivered.

Also present were Tushar from JH marketing and Dr Sheetal Nayyar another consultant from JH Adolescent clinic.The lectures were followed by a very interactive Question answer session. Parents found the session very informative and wanted more such sessions. Many parents signed up the registration forms that were distributed for parenting workshops to be conducted at JH in near future

Dr. Shailaja Mane, AACCI Coordinator, Pune coordinated the preparation with the students. Intern - Dr.Nikita Galani AACCI youth leader and an intern from actively contributed in guiding the students to organise various sessions like a skits debated, poem etc on digital media. Miss Sehjar an intern did comparing of the program Master Sourabh Mane, youth leader of AACCI youth wing attended this session.

National WIMALS – Women IMA Leaders summit which was held for the first time by IMA HQ and the IMA women doctors’ wing .on 13-14 October in IMA House New Delhi .Dr Swati Y Bhave was invited to participate.

IMA HQ for the first time started ALL India IMA Woman Empowerment Awards in 2018. She also received an award f of woman empowerment for her work in Adolescent health. 6 other woman from various states received this award.

Award was given by chief guest Dr Jayanti ben Mehta – Former chairperson MCI, and Dr Ravi Wankhedkar National IMA president .Also present were President of IMA WDW Dr Mona Desai and Secretary Neeta Biyani and Dr Tandon Secretary of IMA and other office bearers. Developing an agenda on Prevention of NCDs through empowering and engaging PLWNCDs. Key challenges to access treatment care and support

AACCI had actively participated in this event. And organised session of paediatric and Adolescent patients

Dr.Shailaja Mane, AACCI Pune Co-ordinator was a chairperson and moderated the session. And gave a talk on "Special challenges of managing NCDs in children & adolescents patients"

Dr.Nikita Galani, AACCI Youth Advocate and an intern from Dr DY Patil Medical College, Pune shared her experience and appealed all to increase the awareness and extend the care for NCD’s.

Dr. Anita Manoj, Medical Officer in Railway hospital, Mumbai had co moderated this session and shared her experience in managing children with NCD’s.

Dr. Anita Patil, from Mumbai Co facilitated the experience sharing from Children with NCD’s and their parents. She also shared experience of school programs for prevention of NCD’s.

Mr. Ravi Ambore (MSW) Social Worker from Sneh Foundation invited by AACCI, had given a short presentation of experience of SNEH foundation an NGO working with urban slums in Pimpri, Chinchwad corporation area.

Total eight children and adolescents with NCD’s and few Parents from Mumbai participated actively during this interactive session .The discussed their difficulties and challenges and given valuable suggestions as well.

This AACCI session was very well appreciated by the audience.

Indian Cancer society had organized a regional consultation under the aegis of Healthy India Alliance, with the objective of providing a platform to individuals living with NCD’s , their caretakers, and health care providers have a voice and discuss patient engagement in framing of policy by decision makers. The consultation aimed to identify grassroots level priorities, needs and opportunities to inform the national NCD agenda for Healthy India Alliance as well as for the Government in line with the set of 10 national voluntary targets under the National Action Plan to reduce premature NCD mortality by 25% by 2025 adopted by India in 2013 Experts from various fields, patients and their caretakers shared their experience: Dr. Hilde de Graeve (WHO), Dr. Sanjiv Kumar (IIHMR Dwarka). Jyotsna Govil, Vice Chairman, ICS and Dr Priya Parmar Director Operations ICS conducted the meeting.

AACCI Executive Director, Dr Swati Bhave was invited for the meeting in view of the expertise, experience and contribution to care of adolescents having NCD. Dr. Sunita Manchanda, Coordinator of AACCI NCR represented AACCI and participated actively in this meeting. She spoke on challenges of NCD in this age group and importance of Life skills.

Dr Swati Bhave was invited by Dr Dilip R. Patel, chair, Department of Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Western Michigan University Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine, Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, as a visiting professor to give a Grand round lecture.

She spoke on “Perspectives of Global Health – the Indian Urban adolescent.” She discussed the problems and issues of the urban adolescent school and college children coming from affluent and higher socioeconomic social groups. She also discussed the intervention programs conducted by AACCI in Indian schools and colleges from various cities and the research data collected

She also discussed at length AACCI peer educator training and youth wing activities

The program for medical students to be NCD youth champions was very much appreciated and Dr Dilip R. Patel expressed interest in collaboration with the medical students from India and the USA centre as part of their Global Health program in coming years.

They were editors to the first text book of adolescent medicine – in India, Bhave’s Textbook of Adolescent Medicine published in 2006

ICMR-National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research in collaboration with the WHO FCTC Global Knowledge Hub on smokless Tobacco (KH-SLT)had organized a‘Stakeholders Meeting and National Consultation on Smokeless Tobacco Control’ to highlight the above concerns and need for implementing effective and evidence-based strategies to reduce SLT use in the country.

This meeting was focused on strengthening the smokeless tobacco control policy, youth access, cessation, economics, regulatory and implementation issues, besides the need for future research to advance SLT control in India. Dr.Balram Bhargav, DG,ICMR &Secretary DHR and Prof. Ravi Mehrotra, Director, NICPR and KH-SLT had conducted this meeting. Around 30 experts from various fields from the country participated in it.

Dr. Swati Bhave was invited for the meeting in view of the expertise, experience and contribution to tobacco control in the country. Dr.Shailaja Mane , Coordinator of AACCI Pune represented AACCI and participated actively in this meeting and group discussion on behalf of her. The important points she raised about using Life skill education approach for conducting workshops in Schools and colleges to reduce SLT and participation of young people in delivering health related messages to youth were well taken and included in the strategy draft for prevention of SLT in young people.

AACCI had organised a hands on training of trainer's session during the Life Skills Education workshop. This session was moderated by Dr. Swati Bhave and the participants were members of the AACCI youth wing who have been trained as Peer educators in AACCI LSE module. The peer educators were - Sourabh Mane ,leader of AACCI youth wing who is a student of MIT College of Engineering , Dr.Nikita Galani and Dr.Shejar – interns and l Dr. Arjun and Dr.Bharat Reddy postgraduate students of Dept.of Pediatrics, Dr. D Y Patil Medical College, Pune. They demonstrated through role plays and group discussions various life skills.

AACCI had organised a workshop Introduction of Life Skills Education (LSE) for all the faculty of this college.

Total 49 teachers and head of the departments were present for this workshop for all the sessions’ o f the workshop. They remaining 11 being on examination duty attended the sessions they could .Inspired by the role plays done by AACCI Faculty and Peer educators, the staff also actively also did role plays.

Since the group discussions were on topics related to real situation related to their home and work life, the group discussions were very lively. The feedback proforma showed most ratings as excellent or good. The faculty was very happy that the principal Prof Vankudre thought of organising such a program for all faculties.

AACCI had organised a workshop Introduction of Life Skills Education (LSE) for all the faculty of this college .Inauguration of this workshop was done on 12th June 2018 and valedictory function on 13th June afternoon

Inaugural programs: Principal Prof. Dr. Harish Vankudre why he has organised this program for the faculty explained the need of life skills education. Dr. Swati Bhave gave an outline of the two days workshop. Mrs. Savita Itkarkar compared the program. AACCI Faculties were Dr.Shailaja Mane, Mrs Sujata Hinjane, Dr.Sharmila Gujar, Dr.Sheetal Nayyar and Dr.Bajeshree Deokar. AACCI trainee faculty were Dr. Sanyogita Nadkarni, Dr. Shilpa and Dr Shashi Dudhgaonkar, Dr.Jyoti Anjom and Dr.Jyoti Landge. Six peer educators from AACCI Youth wing also attended this session

Dr. Sharad Agarkhedkar, Head of Dept. of Dr. D.Y Y Patil Medical College, Pune and an advisor of AACCI was a chief guest of this function. He gave a very good address which was very much appreciated. Certificates were given by him to the faculty, peer educators and participants

AACCI has launched a project for NCD awareness for youth. In association with Dept.of Community Medicine and Dept.of Pediatrics of Dr. D.Y.Patil College, Hospital & Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune, it will be done for medical students. Dr. Amitav Banerjee, Head of Dept. Dr.Jyoti, Assist.Prof and social workers of Community Medicine dept. organised this session.

5 postgraduate students from Department of paediatrics attended this session as recommended by the HOD Dr Sharad Agarkhedkar.

A total 148 undergraduate II MBBS Students attended the session and 60 students expressed their willingness to join the peer educator group at the end of the session . Students actively participated in this interactive session. A pre and post session questionnaire designed by AACCI , was also filled up.

Dr. Swati Bhave delivered a lecture on "Awareness of NCD's and prevention in adolescents". Dr.Shailaja Mane gave a talk on "Metabolic Syndrome in Adolescents"

My Suggestions" Her lecture was very much appreciated other speakers were Dr Virupaksha Devaramane, Dr Jayashree K, Dr Nishchal Bhatt, Dr Preeti Galagali, was speakers. The President IAP Santosh Soans is very keen on this program .Dr Yates Pujar is the spirit behind this program Total 60 doctors from various specialities attended this workshop. Program's motive and purpose was very well appreciated and the need to build parenting skills in self and community was realised.

A Strategy Planning Meeting of HIA was held on 3rd and 4th April 2018in Delhi. Both days the representation of AACCI was done by Dr. Swati Bhave (Executive Director of AACCI), Dr.Shailaja Mane (AACCI, Pune coordinator). Dr. Latika Bhalla (AACCI, Delhi Coordinator) and Dr. Sunita Manchanda (AACCI Jt Delhi coordinator) attended post lunch sessions

The 7th Governing Board Meeting of HIA was held on 5th April, 2018.Dr.Swati Bhave and Dr.Shailaja Mane represented AACCI in this meeting.
